A porch can be a fantastic addition to your house, whether it’s to improve the appearance and add value to your property or just somewhere to put your shoes.

Most companies that sell and build porches are aware of the “three square metres” rule, by which the ground floor area (measured externally) should not exceed three square metres. There are however some common mistakes made with planning permission on a porch.
Firstly, building too close to the boundary fronting the road, as any part of the porch should not be within two metres of any boundary of a highway to be classed as permitted development.
Secondly, building the porch too high, as the maximum height is only 3m to be classed as permitted development which could often affect your porch design if there’s a high build up to floor level.
