Does A Porch Require Planning Permission

Dec 13, 2023 | News

A porch can be a fantastic addition to your house, whether it’s to improve the appearance and add value to your property or just somewhere to put your shoes.

We’ve recently submitted a few planning applications for porches but not all porches require planning permission. Check out the Planning Portal for a guide and if you’re still unsure please get in touch with us on info@myconservatorydesign.com or request a call back on the website.

Most companies that sell and build porches are aware of the “three square metres” rule, by which the ground floor area (measured externally) should not exceed three square metres. There are however some common mistakes made with planning permission on a porch.

Firstly, building too close to the boundary fronting the road, as any part of the porch should not be within two metres of any boundary of a highway to be classed as permitted development.

Secondly, building the porch too high, as the maximum height is only 3m to be classed as permitted development which could often affect your porch design if there’s a high build up to floor level.

There’s no harm in submitting a planning enquiry when thinking of building a porch which we’ve mentioned in previous posts on our website www.myconservatorydesign.com

We’ve added a few photos of some porches we’ve been involved with to give you some design ideas.
